Abstrak

The article examines various approaches for addressing the tensions and trade-offs that arise between common AI ethics aspects when implementing responsible AI systems. It covers five key approaches:

  1. Dominant Aspects: Prioritizing the most dominant or pertinent ethics aspect in a given context, which is a simple but limited approach that does not consider nuance or balance.

  2. Risk Reduction via Aspect Infringement and Amelioration: A multi-step strategy that identifies operational risks, allows for infringement of ethics aspects to reduce risks, and then attempts to ameliorate the infringement. This approach considers context but may be error-prone and treat ethics as add-ons.

  3. Trade-Off Analysis in Requirements Engineering: Graphically mapping the linkages between ethics aspects and system components, along with their positive or negative effects. This proactive approach can explore many trade-offs, but the representation can become complex.

  4. Quantitative Ranking of Trade-Off Solutions: Ranking possible technical solutions based on a weighted combination of normalized sub-scores representing desired characteristics. This provides a quantitative procedure but the selection and weighting of characteristics can be subjective.

  5. Specification and Balancing via Principlism: Elaborating on high-level ethics principles to describe their application, and then using a set of conditions to guide the balancing or prioritization of conflicting principles. This approach provides a strong framework but leaves significant room for developer judgment.

The article then proposes a multi-step framework that draws on the insights from these approaches. The framework consists of: (i) proactive identification of tensions, (ii) prioritization and weighting of ethics aspects, and (iii) justification and documentation of trade-off decisions. This framework aims to facilitate the implementation of well-rounded responsible AI systems that are appropriate for potential regulatory requirements.
