This study evaluates the use of virtual reality (VR) technologies as a teaching tool in oral placement therapy, a subset of speech therapy. The researcher distributed instructional videos using traditional 2D lecture and modified 3D video to prompt responses from oral placement therapy clients and professionals. The key findings are: Participants who viewed the 2D video scored higher on average (92%) on the knowledge test compared to the 3D group (77.88%). Participants who viewed the 2D video had more positive opinions on average about the presentation compared to the 3D group. However, 50% of participants who experienced the 3D video preferred that learning method over a traditional lecture. Further experimentation is required to determine how well oral placement therapists respond to physically interacting with a 3D model instead of just viewing it. The study demonstrates that virtual reality is viable as a learning tool, but knowledge retention may not be as high as using traditional lecture format.
