The study explores the migration patterns between Twitter and Mastodon following Twitter's ownership change in October 2022. The researchers collected data on over 10,000 users who migrated from Twitter to Mastodon within the first ten weeks. Key insights: Migration Patterns: The migration process can be divided into three phases: protesting, adaptation, and current. During the protesting phase, there was a steep decline in active users on Twitter and a surge on Mastodon. In the adaptation phase, users shifted their attention back and forth between the two platforms. In the current phase, the momentum of migration to Mastodon has weakened, with more users staying active on Twitter.
