The study explores the impact of humor in chatbot-delivered interventions for physical activity. It reveals that a humorous communication style positively influences physical activity levels by enhancing user engagement. However, motivation did not mediate this relationship effectively. The findings suggest that humor can be a valuable tool in promoting behavioral change through engaging interactions.
Regular physical activity is crucial for reducing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Chatbots offer cost-effective health interventions due to limited healthcare accessibility. Affiliative humor positively impacts physical activity levels by enhancing user engagement. However, motivation does not mediate this relationship effectively. Integrating humor into chatbots can compensate for the lack of empathy and personal connection found in human interactions.
The study involved a randomized controlled trial with 66 participants across three groups: humorous, non-humorous, and no-intervention. Results showed that the humorous group had significantly higher physical activity levels compared to the other groups. User engagement acted as a mediator between the communication style and changes in physical activity levels. Motivation did not play a significant mediating role.
