A group of camp counselors get into a violent altercation with local townies after a night out, leading to a chaotic and dangerous situation.
Abstract
The author recounts their experience as a camp counselor at Camp Cobbossee in Maine. On one of their weekly nights off, the counselors go out to a local bar. As they are leaving to return to the camp, they are confronted by a group of local men who start a fight with them. The situation quickly escalates, with one of the townies pulling out a knife. The author, one of the few female counselors, runs back to the bar to get help.
The author provides context, explaining that they took the camp counselor job as a way to get a change of scenery after a recent breakup. They describe the camp van they use to transport the counselors and the dynamics within the group, with the majority being college-aged men.
The confrontation between the two groups is described in detail, with the townies aggressively telling the counselors to leave their town. A standoff ensues before one of the townies punches one of the counselors, Josh, leading to a full-blown fight breaking out. The author steps back, unsure of how they can be most helpful, until a knife is pulled, at which point they run to get assistance.
