Abstract
The study explored how to implement prosocial VR content, "Our Neighbor Hero," to enhance users' growth mindsets and empathy. The VR content featured a friendly superhero character who helps others in various neighborhood emergencies. The content was designed with several considerations to facilitate users' identification with the virtual character and cultivate their growth mindsets step-by-step. The study conducted an experiment with two groups: one group experienced the VR content only, while the other group received additional growth mindset training. The results showed that the combined group, who experienced both the VR content and the mindset training, reported significantly higher empathic motives compared to the VR-only group. Although the differences in empathy and prosocial behavior levels were not statistically significant, the qualitative feedback from participants indicated that the VR content had educational effects in promoting empathy and prosocial behaviors. The study suggests that VR can be an effective platform for empathy training when combined with mindset interventions. The virtual superhero character served as a bridge, enabling users to identify with the character and cultivate a growth mindset as they completed the prosocial missions. The various design considerations, such as positive feedback, content difficulty, and multimodal interactions, also contributed to enhancing users' motivation and immersion in the VR experience.
