Children with ADHD exhibit atypical biological motion perception, with a dissociation between local and global processing.
Samenvatting
The ability to perceive biological motion (BM) is crucial for human survival and social interaction. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often exhibit deficits in social interaction. This study compared the differences in abilities to process local kinematic and global configurational cues between typically developing (TD) and ADHD children. Results revealed that children with ADHD exhibited atypical BM perception, with a potential dissociation between local and global BM information processing. Local BM processing ability was related to social interaction skills, while global BM processing improved significantly with age. General BM perception could be affected by sustained attention ability in children with ADHD, mediated by Reasoning Intelligence.
Biological motion (BM) conveys intention, emotion, gender, and identity through movements of living creatures. Previous studies have deconstructed BM processing into local and global components. Local cues are genetically preserved and contribute to detecting life without explicit recognition or attention. Global cues involve top-down modulation and are influenced by attention. Individuals with deficits in BM processing exhibit worse social perception in daily life.
Studies have indicated that individuals with deficits in BM processing show worse social perception, especially in the subdimension of communication. The current study focused on two fundamental abilities involved in processing BM cues: local kinematic cues derived from major joint motion tracks and global configurational cues of human configuration.
