In this study, the potential of sneaking as a playful input modality for virtual environments is explored. The authors discuss the benefits of incorporating gait-based interactions in immersive experiences, particularly in stealth VR games. Three technical approaches are developed, including foot-tracking and abstraction levels. The evaluation reveals the potential of sneaking-based interactions, offering unique challenges and thrilling gameplay. The study compares sneaking mechanisms using foot-tracking, HMD movement, and gamepad controls in a VR stealth game scenario. Results show increased presence, tension, and challenge with movement-based techniques. Participants found the sneaking techniques intuitive and realistic, with the tracker approach requiring more physical effort. The study highlights the potential of gait-centered interactions for immersive VR experiences.
