Abstract
The researchers investigate the distribution and usage of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on the anonymous Tor network over a five-year period from 2018 to 2023. They find that: Approximately one-fifth of the unique websites hosted through the Tor network share CSAM. This is consistent with previous research findings from 2013. The majority (21 out of 26) of the top Tor search engines provide access to CSAM websites, and four even promote and advocate for CSAM. 11.1% of the 110,133,715 total search sessions on the Ahmia.fi Tor search engine explicitly seek CSAM. The single phrase "child porn" is one of the top queries. When searching for CSAM by age, 40.5% of the searches target 11-year-olds and younger, 54.5% target 12- to 16-year-olds, and the girl-to-boy search ratio is 4:3. The researchers introduce an intervention where Tor search engines redirect CSAM users to a survey. The survey reveals that 65.3% of CSAM users first saw the material when they were children themselves, and 50.5% first encountered it accidentally, demonstrating the widespread availability of CSAM.
