How does handwriting to text conversion work?

Handwriting to text conversion turns a picture of handwritten words into characters you can copy, search and edit. A photo of your notes is only pixels, and handwriting is harder to read than print: letters join up, slant and change shape from one word to the next. Linnk's handwriting to text converter sends each page image to AI models (Linnk uses ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini models), which read the handwriting in context rather than letter by letter, then rebuild the page as text in reading order. Print and legible cursive are transcribed; a word the models can't make out is marked [illegible] and an unclear digit is marked with a question mark, instead of being filled in with a plausible guess. On a printed form, the handwritten answers come out next to their printed labels. How do I convert handwriting to text?

Can it convert cursive to text?

Yes, when the cursive is legible. Joined-up letters, loops and slanted script are read as words, the same way as print. Very rushed or cramped cursive is harder, and any word the models can't make out is marked [illegible] instead of being replaced with a guess.

What happens with messy or faint handwriting?

Legible parts are transcribed and the rest is flagged. A word that can't be read comes back as [illegible], and a digit that can't be read comes back as a question mark, so you know exactly which spots to check against the page. Faint pencil, heavy crossings-out and blurred photos lower the share that can be read, so shoot in even light and hold the phone square to the page.

Can I convert handwriting to Word?

Yes. After the conversion, choose Word and the document is built on request, usually in a few minutes. Each page is rebuilt as editable text where possible; a page that can't be rebuilt comes back as plain paragraphs or, rarely, as a picture of the page, and the result tells you which pages those are.

Does it work on forms filled in by hand?

Yes. On a printed form with handwritten answers, the printed labels and the handwritten entries are both transcribed, in reading order, so names, dates and amounts written into the boxes come out as text next to their labels. Signatures are not typed out; in the searchable PDF they are placed back as images where they sat.

Which languages and scripts can it read?

Convert reads handwriting in the most widely used languages and scripts, including right-to-left scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The text comes back in its own language by default; switch the output to Translate to… before you start if you want it in another language.

How is this different from regular OCR?

Classic OCR matches printed letter shapes, so it tends to struggle once letters join up or vary from word to word. Linnk sends the page image to AI models (Linnk uses ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini models), which read the handwriting in context, and then rebuild the page as text. It still can't read what a person couldn't read either, which is why unreadable words are marked.

Which file types can I upload?

Photos and scans as JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC or HEIF, and PDF files, scanned or not. Each photo is treated as a one-page scan. Word, PowerPoint and Excel files aren't accepted here because they already contain text.

How long does it take?

Usually under a minute per page, often around half a minute. The page shows an estimate while it works. A Word file takes a few extra minutes because it is built after the conversion.

Is handwriting to text free?
